Welcome to the Boomer Blog

This is the beginning of a blog related to Boomers and how they (we) fit into the modern Christian Church. I am a Baptist and minister with the First Baptist Church of Augusta. I am a past president of ABMA and continue to work with their communications and web site.

My greatest concern is that churches begin to recognize the extensive resource they have in their members who are Boomers (born 1946 - 1964). My fear is that churches will not know how to integrate the energy and ideas of Boomers into thier ministry. This site is a place where we can discuss those issues and share ideas.

I earned my doctorate from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary with a special focus on Aging and retirement so one can say I am an expert but so far I am too close to home. In reality I am a fellow searcher so let's walk together in this forum.

Jake,
Good to see this website going and I look forward to see the gang hopefully this year. I think since one of the things that we know is that boomers want to do things of significance and do them well.

Missions if one of those areas that we can use to reach them. I am going to try this later this year; but have an inter-generational local mission project on Saturdays when everyone is available; (every quarter or once every six months) and have youth, parents and grandparents working on the same project. It could be doing some form of repair on a house of someone in the church or community. It builds family unity, they won't ever forget it and it builds bridges across the ages. Just a thought. I look forward to see what others have to say. Keep in touch!

I like this idea. We do a number of community projects. Most involve either our student ministry or our Men on Missions. We have an ongoing ministry to disaster areas but most are targeted to a specific age group. I am going to suggest to our Minister of Missions that we work toward a intergenerational mission project.
